The Biggest Trailers and Announcements from Gamescom 2023 - Weekly Roundup

Gamescom 2023, the annual European gaming conference set in Cologne, Germany, is officially over. While there weren’t many big-ticket announcements, we were treated to major trailers for the back half of 2023. Here are the highlights:

Todd and Geoff talk Starfield

Starfield is undoubtedly one of the biggest games of the fall – and it’s certainly Xbox’s best shot at a killer exclusive, dropping September 6th. Gamescom delivered both a new live-action teaser trailer and a conversation between Geoff Keighley and Bethesda head Todd Howard about the game.

Modern Warfare 3 sees its first operation

Following last years Modern Warfare 2, November 10 sees Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 release, officially closing out the remakes of the Modern Warfare series. At Gamescom, fans got an extended look at the game’s first level, Operation 627.

Alan Wake 2 is stuck between a delay and a Dark Place

While Alan Wake 2 has been pushed back 10 days to the 27th of October, there’s still plenty of hype. Remedy Entertainment looked to continue that excitement with a trailer showcasing the Dark Place, a nightmarish reality where part of the game will take place.

Tekken 8 and Mortal Kombat 1

Both Netherrealm and Bandai Namco made appearances at Gamescom, showcasing new characters in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 and announcing that Tekken 8 is coming out January 26 of next year, respectively. While the bigger news is arguably the Tekken 8 announcement, it’s still great to see more characters for the hotly-anticipated Mortal Kombat 1.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is not just a trick of the light

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is another major title in the October 2023 calendar, and a new gameplay trailer dropped during Gamescom ONL.

Little Nightmares 3 has enough scares for two

Little Nightmares, the horror-puzzle series from Supermassive Games, is officially getting a third installment! Little Nightmares 3 was announced with a gameplay trailer showcasing scares, co-op gameplay, and the inventive worldbuilding that Little Nightmares is known for.

Sonic Superstars joins the October party

Sonic fans rejoice! Not only did Sonic Superstars officially get a release date in October 17th (further adding fuel to the Fall fire), but free DLC for Sonic Frontiers was announced as well!

Black Myth: Wukong looks promising as ever

Black Myth: Wukong is an exciting upcoming Soulslike game based on the 16th century Chinese novel The Journey to the West. While there’s no release date, extensive gameplay was shown at Gamescom, and IGN managed to get a hands-on preview that promises great things from Chinese developer Game Science.

Lastly, something strange from a horrible goose:

There’s no way to describe Thank Goodness You’re Here. It’s from the minds at Panic Inc., the publishers behind Untitled Goose Game. It’s coming to Nintendo Switch at some point in the future. It got a reveal trailer at Gamescom, and by golly does it look absurd. If you’re a fan of games like Untitled Goose Game or Donut County, well…Thank Goodness You’re Here.
