Overwatch 2 finally hits Steam - and becomes the worst reviewed game in the history of the platform – Weekly Roundup
As if things couldn’t get any worse for Activision Blizzard.
When you make a game as monumental and impactful as Overwatch, the bar gets set pretty high. Few studios have released blockbuster games and followed them up with just as much success, and Overwatch is no exception. When the sequel to the colorful online shooter was first announced back in 2019, it was seen as an extension of the original game, with players in both servers able to enjoy the same experience. Flash forward to its release last October and lots had changed. The original game was fully replaced overnight and pulled from storefronts. Team sizes in game were reduced from six to five, one of a slew of controversial mechanics changes. And fans were…less than pleased.
Reviews weren’t bad, of course. It’s just that people knew there was no topping the original. And when that would be fine if people could still access the original. But its gone forever.
So by finally bringing Overwatch 2 to the PC three days ago, in a lull in the gaming world between Baldur’s Gate 3 and the upcoming Starfield, Blizzard has created the perfect window for the community to voice their opinions. And voice they have.
Overwatch 2 currently has 108,693 reviews on the Steam storefront. Of those 108,000 reviews? Just under 10,000 are positive. If we’re doing the math, that’s…not good. In fact, that’s the worst reviewed game on the largest gaming storefront in the industry.
For context, Steam is not an incredibly discerning platform. There are hundreds of thousands of games available with zero effort, care, or forethought put into them. Crass, lewd, inappropriate, or flat-out bad games find their way to Steam on the daily. So, a AAA game made by one of the biggest publishers in the world (a sequel to a beloved title, no less!) drawing such ire from the gaming community is practically unheard of. Move over, Konami, Riot Games, and Electronic Arts (EA disguising themselves as a better brand!): there’s a new ugly duckling at the pond.
This is the last thing Blizzard needed. While Diablo IV bought them some goodwill, their acquisition with Xbox is delayed until the Fall and known sexual harasser Bobby Kotick is still sitting as CEO of the company. It’s safe to say that good PR has never been harder to come by.
Here’s hoping someone - literally anyone - at Activision Blizzard can turn things around by the fall, when the acquisition deadline hits and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 releases. In the meantime, hop on Steam! Let Blizzard know how bad you think Overwatch 2!
It’s not like the score can go any lower, after all.
