The Behemoth doesn’t know what’s next after Alien Hominid: Invasion - and that’s how they like it

I got the opportunity to speak with Amanda, a team member with developer The Behemoth, about the new updates coming to their latest game Alien Hominid: Invasion, what it’s been like revisiting the title after 15 years, and what’s next for the team.

Q: Alien Hominid: Invasion came out in November of last year. how’s the reception been?

A: It’s been pretty good! We’ve been taking all our feedback and we’re actually presenting a new update soon called the Juicy Variety Update. We have a pretty positive review score on Steam, which we’re pretty happy about. We have been taking feedback from those reviews and we are balancing the game a little bit more, we’re going to be adding a new mutation, new hazards. There’s actually a new mini-boss coming, and after you defeat him you can actually get inside him and hop around and cause chaos.

Q: Super cool! What’s it been like revisiting Alien Hominid after 15 years of development?

A: Oh, it’s been amazing! So, Alien Hominid HD was getting kind of “lost in the sauce”. You couldn’t purchase it on modern consoles and game preservation is really important to us. It all started with us wanting to essentially remaster Alien Hominid HD, fix some bugs from the past and present it for modern consoles. So what you’re seeing here is-

Q: The new, upscaled-

A: Yeah, exactly. So as we were preparing this game for modern consoles, we had an idea for a minigame. And that minigame became Alien Hominid: Invasion. We realized we had to make a whole new game. So a sequel was never really in the plan, and we don’t really call it a sequel, we call it a “reimagination!”

Q: Yeah! That’s fun branding!

A: It’s kind of like Alien Hominid, but taking all the skills Behemoth has learned over time, over 20 years - almost 21 years actually.

Q: Yeah, about to be. Speaking of 21 years, you’ve been going for so long, you’ve played with all sorts of different genres: what’s next for The Behemoth? What do you want to tackle next?

A: So, we haven’t even started on our next project.

Q: Amazing. Working on Invasion’s updates.

A: Yeah. It’s really interesting, everyone’s asking us what’s coming next, and we don’t even know! After the Juicy Variety update, we’ll probably start the prototyping phase for our next game. What that will be, we don’t know yet, but we do like to tackle new genres with each new title.

A special thanks to The Behemoth team for facilitating this interview.
